What is PMVA?

Date

PMVA, which stands for Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression, is a specialised training designed to equip staff in healthcare, social care, and other frontline sectors with the skills needed to manage challenging behaviours safely. This training is crucial in environments where individuals might exhibit aggression or violence due to various factors such as mental health issues, frustration, learning difficulties, pain, drug and alcohol withdrawal, and infections.

Creating a Safer Working Environment

At Evolve PMVA, our focus is on creating a safer working environment for both staff and the individuals they support. We believe that safety comes from knowledge, preparation, and a strong emphasis on de-escalation techniques. PMVA training is not about teaching physical restraint as a first response—it’s about understanding the root causes of aggression and learning how to defuse situations before they escalate.

Hands-On as a Last Resort

Physical intervention is always an extreme last resort. Our training prioritises communication, empathy, and de-escalation techniques, working on a hierarchical approach focusing on primary, secondary, and tertiary preventions. By using these approaches, the need for physical intervention is significantly reduced. However, should the situation require it, our training ensures that staff are equipped with safe, controlled techniques that minimise harm to all involved.

Empowering Staff with Essential Skills

PMVA training empowers staff with the skills to protect themselves and those they support. Understanding how to stay calm under pressure, recognising the signs of anger, aggression and violence, and knowing how and when to intervene safely are all critical components of the training. These skills not only keep people safe but also contribute to a more positive, supportive, and therapeutic environment.

The Importance of De-escalation

We place a strong emphasis on de-escalation as the primary strategy in managing challenging situations. By focusing on non-physical interventions first, we reduce the likelihood of aggression escalating to the point where physical intervention is necessary. This approach promotes a culture of respect and dignity, ensuring that individuals are treated with care and understanding.
